Volume: NVA volume should match the VUI as a whole, not be drastically louder or quieter. Depending on the instrumentation of your earcons, there’s more to this than pure decibel level. A bit of testing in realistic environments will solve this.

Duration: Earcons in general should be short with a distinct onset and end. Experiment—a good starting point is 50 ms. If an earcon is supposed to mean “VUI is listening” but the audio trails off gradually, it’s difficult for users to know when to start speaking—they may even wait so long the microphone stops listening! Latency NVA should be something that can loop easily for flexible duration.
